Why Bookmakers Limit Arbitrage Bettors and What to Do

Account limiting, not losing, is the main surebet risk. How bookmakers spot arbers, what happens to your account, what you can do and why exchanges don't limit.

Bookmakers limit arbers because arbers cost them money. A retail bookmaker's 5–8% margin is built for players who bet on opinion and lose on average. A player who bets only on outcomes priced above the market takes the book's margin on every bet. Such a player is easy to spot and cheap to restrict: the account's limit drops to a token amount, and the account becomes useless. This is the main risk of surebets, and it has nothing to do with losing.

How a bookmaker spots an arber

Bet analytics at large bookmakers is automated, and the signs are the same everywhere.

  • Bets only on overpriced outcomes. If every bet a player makes is at odds higher than those of a low-margin benchmark book, it shows after a dozen bets.
  • Bets at the moment of a discrepancy. The bet comes in seconds after the book's line has fallen behind the market, and just before the trader corrects it.
  • Unusual stake amounts. 4,940 ₽ and 5,060 ₽ on two accounts look calculated because they are calculated.
  • Max bets on niche markets. Only an insider or an arber places the maximum on a team total in a tier-3 CS2 match.
  • No “normal” betting. No accumulators, no bets on a favorite team, no in-play bets just for fun.
  • Timing that matches other arbers. Ten new accounts bet the same outcome within a minute of a surebet appearing in a popular scanner.

What happens to the account

Usually nothing dramatic: payouts go through and the account isn't blocked, but the maximum stake on any outcome drops to a few hundred rubles. Less often, the book closes the account and pays out the balance. Licensed bookmakers don't void already-settled bets for arbing; they void bets placed on an obvious line error, and that's a separate story.

Licensed Russian bookmakers operate through TsUPIS (the regulated payment hub through which Russia's licensed bookmakers process deposits and withdrawals), and a cut limit doesn't block withdrawals. Offshore platforms offer fewer guarantees, which is an argument for choosing books for surebets carefully.

What you can do

There's no universal way to avoid being spotted, and articles that promise otherwise are selling thin air. There are techniques that extend an account's life, and there are strategies that don't depend on limits.

  • Round your stakes. 5,000 ₽ instead of 4,940 ₽ costs tens of rubles of profit and removes the most obvious sign. How this affects the calculation is covered in the article on calculating a surebet.
  • Don't bet the maximum on small markets. A bet of half the limit on a tier-2 match draws less attention.
  • Mix in regular bets. Put part of your turnover into ordinary bets with a small negative expectation. That's the price of a longer account life, and you need to account for it.
  • Keep several books. One limited account doesn't stop the work if you have ten bookmakers. That's exactly why a scanner with 27 books is more useful than one with five.
  • Prematch instead of live. In prematch, your bet doesn't arrive a second after the line falls behind, so the “bets at the moment of a discrepancy” sign is weaker.
  • Exchanges. The prediction markets Polymarket and Kalshi don't limit players: they earn on fees and have no interest in the customer losing. The constraint there is order book depth. For an arber with limited accounts, the exchange becomes a second leg that isn't going anywhere. More on the page about surebets with prediction markets.

What not to do

Register accounts with someone else's documents. That breaks both the bookmaker's rules and the law, money in such accounts is lost at the first check, and at licensed bookmakers, identity verification through TsUPIS makes the scheme pointless anyway. Getting around limits with multiple accounts is the same road.

Factoring it into the economics of surebets

Account limiting isn't an event, it's an expense. An account at a retail bookmaker lasts anywhere from weeks to months of active surebet betting, and in that time it has to bring in more than it cost: the time spent on registration and identity verification, the first “cover” bets, the frozen funds. Plan your surebet betting around a set of a dozen books and two exchanges, not around one account with a big limit.

FAQ

How many bets before they limit you?

It depends on the book and on how much your bets look like surebets. Anywhere from a dozen bets to months; bookmakers don't publish exact figures.

Is account limiting permanent?

As a rule, yes. Limits being restored is rare and tied to a long stretch of “normal” betting afterwards.

Do they limit for value bets?

Yes, the signs are the same: bets only on overpriced outcomes. A value bettor takes slightly longer to spot, because there's no second leg with an obviously unusual stake.

What about exchanges?

They don't limit. The only constraints are order book volume and whether the platform is available in your jurisdiction. More on the Prediction markets page.
